Blueberries typically grow in northern climates like Maine. Blueberry bushes bear fruit from May through June although the growing altitude and latitude will affect when the bushes will bear fruit.

Blueberries are packed with a wide range of micronutrients, with notably high levels of the essential dietary mineral manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fiber. Also they contain Dietary fiber, Protein, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), Vitamin E, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Zinc.

Blueberries are just one more super fruit that shows why Jule of the Orient tonic truly is such an outstanding super food product.

Blueberries, especially the wild species, contain anthocyanins, other antioxidant pigments and various phytochemicals which greatly support nutritional health.
Researchers have shown that blueberry anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, flavonols, and tannins inhibit free radicals activity, which assists with the body’s normal response to inflammation.. Similar to red grape, some blueberry species contain in their skins significant levels of resveratrol, a very valuable antioxidant and phytochemical.

Consuming blueberries (and similar berry fruits including cranberries) provides many benefits for the mind, including improvements in mental focus, concentration, and mental sharpness.

Addition clinical studies have shown blueberries to be beneficial for maintaining cholesterol and blood lipids already in the normal range and for maintaining blood pressure already within the normal range.

Antioxidants are thought to help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals associated with the aging process. Blueberries, contain many of these naturally occurring antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E. In addition, blueberries contain anthocyanins and phenolics that can also act as antioxidants. Based on data from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity.

Using a test called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), researchers have shown that a serving of fresh blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables.

Acai Berry one of 21 Super Fruits in Jiaogulan Tonic

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The Acai Berry is just one of the 21 amazing supernutrients in Jule of the Orient. The amazing Jiaogulan herbal tonic. Here is some interesting information about the amazing Acai Berry.
Acai berry growing
Acai is rated as one of the highest antioxidant containing fruits in the world. Acai has 10 times the antioxidant level of grapes and twice that of blueberries. Acai also has up to 30 times the Anthocyanins of red wine.

Acai can have a fairly high ORAC score – fresh acai berries (100 grams) can have an excellent ORAC antioxidant score of up to 5500. However, freeze dried acai (100 grams) can have an off the chart ORAC antioxidant score of over 70,000. These are totals – this means you would have to eat 100 grams or about 3 and a half ounces of fresh acai berries to get 5500. And eating 1 gram of freeze dried acai would give you an ORAC score of 700 per gram.

Second ORAC is only a measure of antioxidant potential in a test tube and doesn’t mean it will have the same effect in the human body. I’m not saying antioxidant products are like this but the potential exists to create a product with a very high off the charts ORAC score and it would be worthless as far an antioxidant capacity in the human body.

Also even if it is effective in the human body ORAC scores over a certain amount are worthless – the human body can only benefit from a certain ORAC score on a daily basis (About 5000 ORAC per day).

The amazing benefits of Acai include increased energy, anti-aging, improved sleep and strong heart health, just to name a few.

Let’s examine what Acai contains from a nutritional standpoint.

First Acai is very rich in vitamins and minerals. Acai contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and E. Acai contains as much Vitamin C as blueberries. Acai also contains the minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc.

Acai is a very valuable source of Plant Sterols
There have been 3 specific plant or sometime called photosterols that are contained in Acai – B-sitosterol, campesterol and sigmasterol. Photosterols have numerous health benefits like healthy heart and digestive function.

Acai is also a very valuable source of Amino Acids and Protein. 19 different amino acids have been identified in Acai.

Also the Acai berry is a very rich source of the healthy unsaturated Omega fats like Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9. Almost half of the Acai berry is fat, with 74% of the fat being the healthy unsaturated fats like Omega 3.

More information on Acai - the Acai berry is 90% seed, with only 10% of the berry edible. So be careful – the seed has not been proven to provide health benefits so avoid any products that use the seed, they are a terrible value.

Also you may have seen advertisements for Acai Berry weight loss products. These are a total scam. There has been no research that indicates drinking acai berry juice or taking acai supplements will result in weight loss.

Also with Acai avoid spray dried, it is vastly inferior to freeze-dried Acai. Also with Acai products that are called extracts are typically not that good a product as you want all the nutrients from the Acai other then the seeds.

Acai Berry Goji Berry & Fruit Salad in a Bottle Health Drinks

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Image of Fruit and Berries

I won’t mention any brands here but here is some food for thought considering some of what I call the fruit salad health juice products. The health juice drinks that contain everything from blueberries, cranberries, grapes, goji berries, acai berries, pomegranate, kiwi and more.

Here are some points to consider. You could argue that blending a dozen or more fruits would give you the benefits of all of them. This makes some sense at first to me until you consider how many years of research would it take to actually perfect a mixture where each fruit you selected actually totally complemented one another. I would think quite a long time and even many more years to produce a product where you had the exact right amount of blueberry and cranberry and goji berry and acai berry and each fruit in the mix for maximum health benefit.

And yet when I look at each of these fruit salad products I see nothing of that. Just some empty words that say each of the fruits was chosen for specific health benefits or something like that.

Let’s look at this from a shear marketing standpoint – to say you have 12 or 15 or 17, etc different fruits in your mix doesn’t that sound more impressive than only having one. I’m sure the makers had that in mind hoping you would think that.

However, what none of these manufacturers tell you, and of course they’ll say it’s for proprietary reasons, is how much blueberry and how much cranberry and how much acai and goji berries are in the product. Could it be mostly grape and cranberry with a little of each of the others? I don’t honestly know.

Also if one particular ingredient was actually the super-star ingredient I would think I would prefer the product to be mostly that and not a bunch of lesser fruits making up the rest of the formula.

Also I know from experience that many fruits like goji for example can vary quite a bit in nutritional value depending upon where they are grown, soil and climate conditions.
No where with any of these products do I see where the producer talks about their process for controlling the nutritional value of each of each fruit.

In addition with 15 or more different fruits in the bottle are you getting enough of any of them to be of real benefit?

Just asking questions – looking for answers.

Actually there is only one ancient berry showing many thousands of years of use and benefit in and area of advanced culture and longevity. That is the Chinese and the goji berry. There are no records of highly advanced civilizations like the Chinese in the South Pacific, not in the Amazon rainforest. No where that I know of in the world is there a super fruit health berry that grows in an area of an advanced civilization of where there is also a history of longevity. Except where the goji berry grows. And while this certainly doesn’t mean there aren’t very valuable nutrients in fruits grown around the world this is just further evidence the goji berry being supreme over all of the others.
